We all love studying don’t we? Nothing better than good old studying. That’s what you’re thinking right? Can’t wait to hit the books each night after school? Yes? No? What do you mean am I crazy?

We want you to maximize every minute spent studying and as a result maximize every minute you don’t have to study! That’s right; we want you to study less. Every day. We want you to study less by learning how to power study – to study with super powerful efficiency and effectiveness which will cut the amount of time spent studying down to nothing! OK, that’s a lie – but you get the drift. You have to study anyway, so why not learn how to learn more in less time?

So what are we waiting for? Let’s get cracking on the new habits you are going to introduce and start putting into practise from today. Here they come – are you ready for them?

Successful students do the following:

Never Over-Study

As soon as you spend too much time studying you will quickly lose focus and the time spent studying will become ‘junk time’. Junk time is when you think you’re studying but you’re just sitting there re-reading the same sentence about 100 times. You’re studying, but you’re not getting anywhere. You’re the mouse on the wheel. Round and round you go. Instead, take regular breaks. We’d recommend a 15 minute break for every 30 minutes of work completed. So it’s a 2 to 1 ratio. For every 2 hours you spend studying over a 3 hour period, at least 1 hour of that should be break time. Taking breaks will restore your energy and refresh your mind – plus it will give your mind some time to take in what you have been doing (this is very useful when you are doing memory activities). That doesn’t mean you should spend the break thinking about what you’ve been doing. To the contrary, allow your mind to rest by doing something completely different. Finally, don’t study for more than 45 minutes in any one sitting if you can avoid it. The brain tends to switch off at the 45 minute mark. Huh? Switch off? I was wondering if mine would ever switch on!

Plan Their Study

Successful students actually plan what they are going to do during their study time. As in, they actually plan the time they will be studying and they set goals for what they will achieve during their study. For example, your new habit could be saying ‘I will study from 5 o’clock to 6.30 pm with a 15 minute break at 5.45 pm. At 6.30 pm I will have done all my maths worksheets and my history homework. I will then go online and get some solid Facebook time under my belt. Planning is no joke. If you want to be successful, do what successful students do. Create a plan, establish a goal and then stick to it like super glue. By having set times for doing work each day it will create a routine for you and as every good teacher will tell you, a routine is the first step towards developing a habit. And this habit is good. When you know that you have committed to work at a specific time each day you will be mentally prepared for it. You will know that 5 o’clock is study time. Just like you know 7 o’clock is dinner time (for some people!). Goal setting is also important. If you sit down with no clear thoughts about what you’re trying to achieve during your study time you will just pointlessly drift along without knowing if you’ve done what you’re supposed to do. So, create a target to achieve and focus your energy towards it. You won’t regret it!

Front Up To The Toughest Work First

Let’s face it, when completing tasks we all love to do the easy things first. Why? Because it build our confidence. We get excited when we’re ticking items off our to-do list. BANG! 1st item ticked off. BANG! Double tick that item now I’m rolling. The only problem with the tick-off easy items first approach is that you use up your best energy at the start of any study session and so if you are tackling the easy parts with your best energy your energy reserves will be low when it comes time to tackle the hard part of what you need to get done. So what happens then? Bet you can’t guess! You can guess? That’s right – you get tired, you get grumpy, you get frustrated and then just give up and go play Xbox. We all do it. We really shouldn’t though. So get in the habit of dedicating your best energy to the difficult tasks first and completing the easy ‘I can do it with my eyes closed’ stuff last.

 

Good Study Habits for Everyone

The question many academics and psychologists ask is why do some students do better than the others? Is it just IQ and genetics or there is more to it. No one will dispute that good studying habits has a crucial role to play.

Studying is a skill. It is an essential skill all students should possess. To be successful in school requires a high level of study skills.

This skill ought to be nurtured and developed. To be successful at school, students ought to first learn these skills, practice them and develop good study habits.

Good study habits include many different skills. Some of the skills are; self-discipline, time management, memorization, concentration, organization, and effort. The effect of having a great desire and passion to succeed cannot be under estimated.

Having the right mindset is important in order to study well. There are times you just not in the right frame of mind to study. The best thing to do is just to avoid studying and have some relaxation. If your mind is occupied by other things, just clear your mind before returning to studying.

Organizing your Time. 
It is important to plan your study time. It is advisable to leave enough time for each of your subjects and more time for the more difficult subjects. It is advisable to comply with the study time requirement for the particular subject as stipulated by your school, college, or university.

Prioritizing your time 
Prioritize your time and put off other activities to allow you to focus and for adequate study time. If you are a slow reader, it is advisable you plan your time well and give yourself more time.

Keep a weekly and monthly schedule planner 
Keep record of due dates of assignments, tests, papers, field trips, etc. Transfer important dates from your syllabus to your weekly/monthly planner. Prioritize your work in order to meet your deadlines.

Study in a place you feel comfortable. 
Study in a place that is conducive. Where there is a lot of distractions become a poor study area. Study in a place you feel comfortable to study. Different people like different study environment. Study in an area that is set up for serious study. Have your learning tools and materials ready for study i.e your textbooks, notebooks, highlighter, pens, pencils, computer, dictionary, thesaurus, etc. Be sure the area is well-lit and conducive. It is advisable you choose a place free from noise and distractions, and not too comfortable. Keep interruptions like phones ringing, doors opening and closing, and people coming and going to the minimum. Also try to study in the same place every day.

Practice by yourself or with friends 
Practice makes perfect. Continually learn and memorize what you have learnt. Go over what you are learning over and over again and good assimilation. Practice with yourself or friends by testing yourself with practice past exams questions, quizzes, or flash cards. Set likely exams questions for yourself and see how you perform. Go over what you have gotten wrong and find out why you get them wrong. Learn from your mistakes. When learning, take notes and write down key important points.

Take breaks (and rewards!) 
Many people view studying as a chore or task, this is human nature. When you are tired, take a break. The brain can only assimilate so much at a time. It is always advisable to plan your breaks in the short and long term. Reward and motivate yourself for any successful milestone.

Learn for knowledge not for exam 
A real study is not just about passing an exam. Studying should be an effort to actually learn things and gain vital knowledge. Learning for exam is frustrating and students are often under pressure. Learning for knowledge is actually easier and stays in the long term memory rather than the short memory.
